Who doesn't love French fries? I mean, if you don't like fries I don't know if we can still be friends. I swear I could eat fries every day and never get tired of them.
But I hate the mess you make when frying them in oil, and they come out pretty good in the oven but that takes forever. Which is why I love making French fries in my air fryer.
Why You'll Love This Recipe
- It's healthier than deep frying
- There's less mess to clean up
- Much faster than cooking in the oven
- Crispy texture that you can't get in the oven
- Foolproof and super easy - even kids can make this recipe!
What You Need
- French Fries - in this recipe I used Ore Ida Crispy Straight-Cut Fries, but you can use any brand or shape you prefer, such as shoestring, crinkle-cut, tater tots, steak fries, or sweet potato fries. Just be sure to check the bag for approximate cooking time as it can vary by shape.
- Olive Oil - a tablespoon or 2 of olive oil coats the fries and gets them extra crispy. You can skip this step or use some cooking spray instead.
- Salt - who eats French fries without salt? You can add some after they come out of the air fryer but I like to add it before
How To Make Fries In The Air Fryer
Take the frozen fries out of the freezer (no need to defrost them) and place them in a bowl. Drizzle them with olive oil and salt and then use your hands to mix them until well coated.
Place the fries in the air fryer in a single layer. If they won't all fit, you're better off splitting them into two batches. If you overcrowd the air fryer, your French fries will not come out crispy.
Air fry the fries at 400 F for about 12 to 15 minutes, or until browned and crispy. You'll want to keep a close eye on them so they don't overcook, and about halfway through the cooking process take out the fryer basket and give it a good shake.
Tips, Tricks, and Variations
- There's no need to defrost the frozen fries ahead of time
- Instead of oil, you can use a few spritzes of cooking spray
- Air fry your fries in a single layer, if you stack them and overcrowd the fryer basket they'll take longer to cook and you won't get that crispy texture
- For best results, shake the fries halfway through cooking
- Leftover fries (Yea, that's not likely) can be stored in the fridge in an airtight container for about 3 to 4 days
- Reheat frozen fries in the air fryer or the microwave, or just enjoy them cold
- Ketchup is all well and good, but there are plenty of other options including homemade honey mustard sipping sauce. Or go the extra mile and make some bacon cheese fries or disco fries
